Child Headed Families

Child Headed Families

As a former Township poverty and HIV plague the residents of Lulekani.

These conditions, among others are the key reasons for many child headed families that live in Lulekani. In those families the children depend on and take care of themselves, because their parents passed away or abandoned them. They also do not have any relatives or other people that care about them.

Mostly the oldest siblings take over the role of the parents to look after their younger brothers and sisters. But in most of the times this responsibility is asking too much of them, because they don’t have any money to buy food or other necessary goods, to feed them appropriately.

Besides that they are themselves children, do not have life experience and lost their childhood.

The children of these families are socially disadvantaged and the weakest in the society, because their future is endangered due to a lack of knowledge, deficiency nourishment and diseases.

Since December 2007 Leka Gape is aiming to find all child headed families in Lulekani and support those ones that depend completely on themselves. We want to find sustainable solutions that make their life easier and improve their future.
