I am 25 years old and study social education. I have almost finished my studies and did six months internship as a compulsory part of my studies.
A friend, who also did an internship at Leka Gape, recommended this organization. As I really wanted to get some experience in development aid, I applied for an internship at Leka Gape.
During my internship I worked in the Carpentry, in the Child Headed Families project and I am also the driver of our organization.
Before my internship I did not care much about the country I would stay in, but since I was here, I recognized that South Africa is a very diverse country.
It is various in nearly every sector, especially when you get aware of the distances between the poor and the rich and between black and white. But personally I think that I am well accepted in this black community and sometimes I even forget that I am white.
My experience here taught me that it is important to get used to the fact that South Africans have a different feeling for time compared to Europeans.
The living conditions of us interns in Basambilu are not comparable with the conditions of the locals, because we have running water, proper toilets, showers and electricity.
Sometimes it feels like living in a golden cave, because we have very good living conditions compared to the local people here.
