about us

Leka Gape is a private NGO (non-governmental organization) in Lulekani, a former township close to Phalaborwa in the Northeast region of South Africa. The organization was founded by a German social worker in 1997 and is offering since over 10 years sustainable development aid.

The key aim of Leka Gape is to improve the living condition of the people in this region. Our projects, which are always done in cooperation with locals, mainly focus on young people and women.

The help of Leka Gape aims at the field of social work as well as at the field of economic development. Two reasons contribute to that: Firstly, effective social help cannot work without a certain economic reality and income-generating projects always have to include a social component.

Secondly, this makes it possible to generate money for other social projects. Thus, Leka Gape initiates many projects both in the social and economic sector.

For example, a bakery was built. Besides the local government Leka Gape has become the most important employer in Lulekani with more than 30 employees. On the social sector, a shelter was opened to give abused women and children a save haven.
